How to Use a Looker Studio Rank Tracker in 4 Steps

If you’ve been in SEO for a long time, you know that reporting is crucial to any SEO strategy–especially for agencies who want to keep their clients.

But what’s the best way to generate effective reports?

This is a high-stakes question for many businesses. Stakeholders or executives may be breathing down your neck to see if you’re accomplishing your goal, or your clients may just be looking for a clear view of their ranks.

Whatever the reason, reports are essential because they help businesses understand their rank changes, which allows them to know how their ranks impact traffic and conversions.

Regarding reports, nobody beats Google Looker Studio (formerly Google Data Studio). Google Looker Studio is the king of visual reports for multiple reasons:

  1. It integrates with your existing tools.
  2. It gives you control over the visuals of your report, allowing you to tailor your experience to fit your or your client’s needs.
  3. It allows you to combine multiple data sources into a single report, giving you a holistic view of your ranks and any other KPIs in a single dashboard.

But how do you use Google Looker Studio effectively to understand your ranks and improve them?

That’s the question we’ll answer today.

Let’s get started!

We’ll cover:

How to Easily Integrate Your SEO Ranking Data on Google Looker Studio

Integrating your SEO ranking data into Google Looker Studio is a game-changer for digital marketers.

By visualizing and analyzing your data with Google Looker Studio, you can gain valuable insights to optimize your website’s performance.

In this section, we’ll explore how to connect your SEO ranking data from ProRankTracker to Google Looker Studio. We’ll also look at how to use that integration effectively to make excellent reports that will help your team impress your clients.

Use Premade Looker Report Templates

The easiest and fastest way to get started with Google Looker Studio is with premade templates.

Fortunately, ProRankTracker comes preprogrammed with 3 powerful Google Looker Studio templates that you can use without editing.

  • Daily report

Daily report

Each report gives you a distinct view of your recent ranking progress and contributes valuable information to your understanding of your strategic success.

Here’s how you make them:

First, click on “Looker Studio” in the left-side toolbar under the “Reports” tab, then click “Add New Report.”

Add New Report

You will be prompted to fill in a name, report type, and URL to include in the report. In the “Report Type” section, you will select the premade Looker report template.

Report Type

Click “Save.”

When you create a report, a Looker ID will be generated. Copy that ID for later use.

Connect ProRankTracker to Google Looker Studio

Now that you’ve generated a report, you must connect your ProRankTracker account to Google Looker Studio. Doing so will enable you to use your ProRankTracker data within Google Looker Studio.

First, go to the Integrations section of ProRankTracker, then select the appropriate premade report (that matches the report you made in the first step).

Connect ProRankTracker to Google Looker Studio

You will be taken to the premade report template. To connect your data to your shiny new report, click “Make a Copy.”

Make a Copy

Now, click “Add data” in the report toolbar.

Add data

You will now be prompted to select from Google Looker Studio partners. Simply type in ProRankTracker and select ProRankTracker as your data source.

After selecting ProRankTracker to connect it as a data source, copy and paste the ID code from the first step into the appropriate slot.

The ProRankTracker report you generated within the ProRankTracker app will now appear within Google Looker Studio.

Design a Google Looker Studio Dashboard

What if you want to include information that must still be added to your premade report?

Make your own!

The best way to create a custom Google Looker Studio dashboard is to use one of the premade report templates we discussed above as a starting point and add whatever you want to it.

The only limit to what you can do in Google Looker Studio is your creativity. Here are a few examples of things you can do to help get you started:

  1. Add tables, charts, or graphs
  2. Change the theme/layout
  3. Add additional data sources (discussed below)
  4. Customize the report with your colors and logo (this is especially important if you’re an SEO agency trying to impress your clients)

Google Looker Studio

There are many places online that discuss how to customize Google Looker Studio reports. If you aren’t experienced with Google Looker Studio, I highly recommend looking at some tutorials to get a feel for everything it can do.

How to Use Data Blending to Combine Sources

There are two ways to combine your data in a single Looker report:

  1. Multiple data sources
  2. Data blends

To add multiple data sources, just repeat the process outlined above for adding data sources until all the sources you want have been added to your report.

You can then have different tables pull from each of those data sources in your report. This is great for examining your company’s data from multiple angles.

For example, you might want to examine your traffic and ranks in the same report. In that case, you could pull data from ProRankTracker and GA4 into the same report, giving you a complete view of your website’s health.

What about data blends?

Data blends are an advanced way to combine data from multiple sources into a single table in Google Looker Studio.

To blend data, create a new table in Google Looker Studio, then click “Blend Data.”

To blend data

You will be prompted to select two data sources to blend on the table and how you would like to join them (I’ve selected a Cross-Join in the example below).

After you’re happy with your blend, click “Save” to blend the data in your table.

Blends can get complex, so I recommend getting familiar with the basics of Google Looker Studio before attempting blends. However, they can be an extremely powerful way to visualize 2 sets of data and their interactions.

For example, you could stack your rank changes on top of your competitors over the same period. This allows you to see how your ranks and theirs are interacting on the SERPs.

How Data Reports Can Help You Improve Your Ranks

So, you’ve created your reports and added your data sources.

Now what?

Your data won’t do you any good just sitting there–you’ve got to use it!

Data reports like the ones we’ve described in this article are powerful because they show how specific strategic changes impact your ranks.

Did you see an increase in your ranks after revamping an older article? Maybe it’s time to start refreshing more articles!

Did you see a decrease in your ranks when your competitors launched a new keyword campaign? Maybe it’s time to combat that attack with a new keyword campaign of your own.

The point is that it’s IMPOSSIBLE to make good strategic decisions if you don’t have data to back it up.

Use the reports you learned how to generate in this article to help you make the best possible strategic decisions, and watch your pages FLY up the SERPs!

What is the best way to show ranking data?

The best way to show ranking data is in a well-constructed report like the ones outlined in this article. Good reports help you visualize your data by presenting it in tables, charts, graphs, and other visual methods. Use these reports to stay up to date on your ranking data.

Is ranking data in Google Search Console and Google Analytics accurate?

Google Search Console and Google Analytics are two of the best SEO tools in the business, but they aren’t rank trackers. That’s just not what they’re designed to do. A dedicated rank tracker like ProRankTracker is a more accurate and powerful way to collect ranking data.

Now that you know just how powerful Google Looker Studio can be, it’s time to get out there and use it!

If you aren’t already a ProRankTracker user, I highly recommend signing up for a 14-day free trial to see how much it could benefit your business.

Happy tracking!
