All you need is to have the right plugin downloaded onto your site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most people use the Yoast SEO plugin, but you can use others if you wish. Once you have the plugin activated, all you have to do is to enable your XML sitemap by clicking on \u201cSEO,\u201d then \u201cGeneral,\u201d and then \u201cFeatures.\u201d And that\u2019s where you can turn the feature on and off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you don\u2019t have WordPress, many other content management systems generate their sitemaps automatically. But if yours doesn\u2019t, you\u2019ll have to generate one manually.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Google Analytics\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then, with Analytics, you\u2019ll want to make sure the correct URL and conversion goals are set up.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Setting up the correct URL.<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make sure the right URL is connected to Google Analytics, go over to \u201cAdmin\u201d in the bottom left corner. This is especially important if you have Analytics Goals connected to these pages, so you don\u2019t have searchers accidentally triggering your goal tracking analytics.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And with PDFs, most of the time, you won\u2019t want your PDFs getting indexed, but if they\u2019re already getting traffic, you might as well keep them alive on Google.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An easy way to check to see if Thank You pages and PDFs aren\u2019t indexed is by doing this:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Head over to your search bar. And enter in:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">site:[your website\u2019s domain] [the type of page you\u2019re looking for]<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For this example, I\u2019ll search our site and look for Thank You pages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/thank-you-pages-index.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3857 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/thank-you-pages-index.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"318\" height=\"78\" srcset=\"https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/thank-you-pages-index.png 318w, https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/thank-you-pages-index-300x74.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 318px) 100vw, 318px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To deindex any page that you find, simply add the URL to your robot.txt file.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once any URL is added to your robot.txt file, it\u2019ll probably take some time for Google to finally drop the page. And what I mean by \u201csite architecture\u201d is URL structure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A rule of thumb with URL structures that you\u2019ll want to keep in mind is keeping them as concise as possible. A best practice of mine that I always make sure of when I\u2019m publishing a new blog post is to keep the URL as the keyword you\u2019re trying to target.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to make a blog post about B2B marketing, it\u2019d be best to keep it as just \u201c\/b2b-marketing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keeping the URL structure short prevents search engines from getting confused about the page&#8217;s purpose and topic.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Categorize URL Structure<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a categorized URL structure is an excellent way to help your site\u2019s UX (user experience) and keep pages organized.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some common categorized URLs you might use are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/blog\/<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/news\/<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/products\/<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\/shop\/<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Important note:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes it\u2019s best to keep your URL structure the same for older pages, even if it\u2019s not categorized (if it\u2019s getting traffic, you should probably keep it the way it is). Then click on \u201cTech &amp; Meta.\u201d From here, scroll down to where it says \u201cHTTP Status Overview.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/404.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3876 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/404.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"582\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/404.png 582w, https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/404-300x160.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 582px) 100vw, 582px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you click on the amount next to \u201c404,\u201d you\u2019ll have access to any 404 pages.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next step?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find out if these pages have traffic, which you can do by looking at Search Console.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If it does have traffic going to a dead 404 page, you\u2019ll want to 301 redirect it to another relevant page on your website.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if it doesn\u2019t have traffic going to it, you\u2019ll be best off killing the page with a 410, so you let Google know not to index the page anymore.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And all of this can be done by downloading some free plugins (if you\u2019re using WordPress).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"page-speed\"><b>Step #5: Optimize Page Speed (Aim for Under 2 Seconds)<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to studies, websites that load within 2 seconds have an average bounce rate of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pingdom.com\/blog\/2018-pingdom-year-in-review\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but a website that takes 5 seconds to load has an average bounce rate of 38%.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s exactly why your website needs to be fast.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Optimizing your page speed can get pretty complex and technical \u2014 even for the experienced SEO marketer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But thankfully, diagnosing a poor page loading speed is way easier than actually fixing it. And when you do get to fixing it, it\u2019s usually best to outsource it to a page speed expert (unless you want to spend the time learning to do it yourself).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To diagnose how long it takes for your website to load, you can use Google\u2019s very own <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/developers.google.com\/speed\/pagespeed\/insights\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Page Speed Insights tool<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or use the Site Audit tool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And since I\u2019m already talking about how to do a website assessment, using the PRT Audit tool is going to be the most convenient choice.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pagespeed.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3877 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pagespeed.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"556\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pagespeed.png 556w, https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/pagespeed-300x98.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 556px) 100vw, 556px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So to test the page speed to see if it\u2019s too slow, plug your site\u2019s domain into the tool of your choice and look at the time it takes to load the page. If it\u2019s over 2.5 seconds, it\u2019s a good sign that your page speed should be improved.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"web-design\"><b>Step #6: Analyze Web Design<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">User experience seems to be all the rage these days when it comes to SEO. And for good reason, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google has specifically said their main focus is on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/7451184?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helping users<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. So that\u2019s why your website needs to be super easy-to-use \u2014 and that starts with web design.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Is your website mobile friendly?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mobile users made up <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/277125\/share-of-website-traffic-coming-from-mobile-devices\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over half of the worldwide internet traffic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So if you haven\u2019t got the memo yet, your website needs to be mobile-friendly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To do a quick test to see if your website is, plug your website URL into <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/search.google.com\/test\/mobile-friendly\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google\u2019s Mobile-Friendly Test<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Are there CTAs above the fold?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s crucial to have a call-to-action above the fold on any page meant to offer anything.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means that a user should be able to click on your offer without scrolling down on the page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without doing this, you\u2019ll risk losing a ton of conversions in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Is navigation easy?<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This one is pretty simple.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are your menu and footer links easy to navigate and use without getting lost? Would a new user be able to know how to find what they need on your site?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are questions you\u2019ll want to keep in mind for your site\u2019s design.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"content\"><b>Step #7: Clean Up the Content<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that you know what you need to do to make sure your site&#8217;s foundation is in good standings, it\u2019s time to focus on one of the most crucial factors impacting your website&#8217;s SEO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that is doing a full evaluation of all of the content on your site.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll start with the type of content that could be self-harming your efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Duplicate Content<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google isn\u2019t too fond of duplicate content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Duplicate content is multiple pieces of content on your website that serve a very similar purpose and target similar keywords. And you <\/span><b>never<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> want any page to use the exact same words.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The last thing you\u2019ll want to do is be competing with yourself to rank for a keyword.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So how do you know if you have duplicate content?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s where Google Search Console comes in again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To search for duplicate content, log onto your Search Console, then click on \u201cPerformance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From here, click on different Queries, and then click on \u201cPages\u201d to see if you\u2019re ranking multiple pages for the same query or keyword.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll have to use your best judgment here to see what pages are actually competing and which ones aren\u2019t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you want an easier and faster way of finding duplicate content, you can use the Site Audit tool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/duplicate.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3878 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/duplicate.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"631\" height=\"123\" srcset=\"https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/duplicate.png 631w, https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/duplicate-300x58.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 631px) 100vw, 631px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just click on the \u201cContent\u201d section of the audit tool and scroll down to the \u201cDuplicate Content\u201d section.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Thin Content<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another type of content that Google isn\u2019t a fan of is thin content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thin content is exactly what it sounds like:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s content that doesn\u2019t have much value \u2014 usually, with not many words on a page.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blog posts, especially, shouldn\u2019t be thin content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To quickly find pages on a site that are too thin, you can use the Site Audit tool again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/ThinContent-1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3880 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/ThinContent-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"534\" height=\"492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/ThinContent-1.png 534w, https:\/\/proranktracker.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/ThinContent-1-300x276.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 534px) 100vw, 534px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click on the \u201cContent\u201d tab, then scroll down to the \u201cText Quality\u201d section.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From here, you can analyze your low content pages and decide which ones are actually thin content.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The content that is truly thin should either have more content added to it or be taken down and 301 redirected to a relevant page.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"backlinks\"><b>Step #8: Check Backlink Profile<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just like on-page SEO, off-page SEO should also be given consideration.\u00a0 Quality backlinks are known to be a surefire way to boost your SEO rankings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s true. But not all backlinks are helping you. In fact, some backlinks may actually be hurting your rankings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So that\u2019ll be the next aspect of your site that you\u2019ll want to glance over.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To do this, you\u2019ll need a tool like Ahrefs to check out your backlink profile.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You should be cautious with any backlinks that look like spam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what\u2019s a spammy link that could hurt you in the SERPs?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any link that\u2019s irrelevant to your site&#8217;s topic, has anchor text that doesn\u2019t make sense, or was manually created to manipulate search algorithms could be considered spam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have a blog about computers: You check your backlink profile and find out you have <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">459<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> new backlinks from shady irrelevant sites, you\u2019ll want to consider disavowing those.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can disavow any link you want with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.google.com\/webmasters\/answer\/2648487?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google\u2019s Disavow tool.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><b>But fair warning:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Random websites are bound to link to your site as it grows, and the truth is most of the time, they\u2019re harmless.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But in extreme scenarios, Google may take notice and penalize your site, which is what you need to be careful with.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"competitors\"><b>Step #9: Spy on Competitor Opportunities<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next thing you\u2019ll want to audit for a website is actually not even on the site itself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s on your competitor\u2019s websites.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chances are you have some competitors that are doing better than you in the SERPs \u2014 which actually brings up a golden opportunity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can learn a lot from your competitors (like how to out-do them).
